Review of the Indigenous Arts Code and Indigenous Arts Code Ltd

The Australian Government's Office For The Arts have engaged Cox Inall Ridgeway (CIR) to undertake an independent review of the Indigenous Arts Code, a voluntary industry Code of Conduct, known as the Code and the how that Code is administered by the Indigenous Art Code Ltd (the organisation).

On behalf of CIR, we are seeking your views and experiences to learn how the Indigenous Art Code has changed the sourcing and trade of Indigenous Art.

Why we want your input

CIR is committed to taking a holistic view of the Indigenous Arts sector, particularly with regards to protecting Indigenous artist’s rights and the ethical trade of Indigenous Art. Your knowledge, experience and views will inform the outcomes of the review.

How you can voice your opinion

CIR invites Indigenous visual arts sector stakeholders; artists, art centres, service organisations, dealers, art market professionals and others, including State and Territory Art bodies to share your views in an online survey, online/in-person consultation (where possible) or by submitting a written submission by 29 November 2024.

What will be the outcome of this consultation

All of this information and feedback will further inform what we already know from the sector and inform the development of CIR’s report, with recommendations to be delivered to the Australian Government by mid-2025.

The Issue

The Indigenous Art Code (The Code) is a voluntary industry code of conduct, developed by the Indigenous visual arts industry and launched in 2009. The Code was setup to be administered by the Indigenous Art Code Ltd (IartC).

In the Australian Government's National Cultural Policy, Revive, a five-year plan to revive the arts in Australia, the government made a commitment to review The Code and the organisation for the first time.

This is an exciting opportunity to be a part of the first review of the Indigenous Art Code and support fair and ethical trade of Indigenous artwork and better protections for Indigenous artists.
